Sushi Dessert

Welcome to The Wednesday Gourmet, an offshoot of From Sushi to Samurais. The Wednesday Gourmet is a weekly descent into my culinary (mis)adventures. Every Wednesday I'll (try to) post about a dish/meal which I've prepared recently. On occasion I may post some random food related rant, but usually I'll stick to my in depth Wednesday post. On to my first post...

Dessert Sushi Style
Let me start off by saying I don't think of myself as a gourmet, I'm more of a wannabe gourmet. But the title The Wednesday Wannabe Gourmet just didn't have the same ring. So I'm wannabe gourmet and my cooking proves it. The last big meal I cooked wasn't my best. It was good, but it wasn't my best. My wife and I, had Dadguy, Bon and The Chaos Girls over for dinner.

The Menu:
  • Italian Popcorn
  • Cheese & Leek Soup
  • Prosciutto and Pea Alfredo on Rotini
  • Pastry Baked Brie w/ Baguette
  • Dessert Sushi
Our popcorn popper burned the popcorn. So the olive oil, parmesan and oregano didn't come through. This dish was not a hit.

The soup turned out really nice, but I forgot to season it before I put it on the table.

The Alfredo tasted great, but it never set up so it was very runny. But you've gotta love anything with Prosciutto in it.

The Pastry Baked Brei was yummy. The cheese course is fast becoming a favorite of mine.

Dessert! OK we are to the dish that was my favorite! I stole this idea from Clare Crespo. Since sushi is hands down my favorite food. I have to find a way to sneak it into every dinner party I do. (if only in spirit) I love this for its playful take on sushi. A powdered donut mimics the rice, a strip of fruit roll-up the Nori, and a sweedish fish plays the fish part to perfection.

Prep for this dish is simple. First slice the donut down the center. (should resemble the letter 'c' after cut) Then slice a bit off the remaining round end. (which leaves a nice smooth spot for the fish to go) Slice fruit leather to roughly 1/2" by 3". Place the fish onto the donut (on sliced off smooth spot) then wrap fruit leather stip around the fish and donut. Press the ends of the fruit leather together then repeat. Cover the pieces and refrigerate until shortly before serving. (this keeps the fruit leather from becoming brittle) Its easy!

Well thats it for this week. Join me next week for Southern Style Mac & Cheese.
